Shrewsbury v Telford – Day Two – Sport

This is part two of a series of blogs about how we can use keyword research to see the differences between the people of Shrewsbury and Telford. Start here if you haven’t read the intro and go here to read about our methodology, if you like that kind of thing.

Leisure in Telford v Leisure in Shrewsbury

It’s day two of our great Google showdown between Telford and Shrewsbury and we’re looking at sport. Which town is sportier? Do we all like the same sports or are we different? Let’s find out! Interestingly, in both Shrewsbury and Telford, people seem to be equally preoccupied with sport – 17% of all the search phrases analysed in each case relate to sport. However, the vast majority of Shrewsbury’s top sport related searches are for football – Telford has searches for a wider array of sports – in particular ice skating and ice hockey are high up the table.

Telford v Shrewsbury – sport searches

This is partly because Shrewsbury Town gets a lot more searches than AFC Telford United, and of course ice related sports are naturally going to be more popular in Telford because we have an ice rink! It does seem, nonetheless, that the people of Telford are significantly more likely to explore a wider range of sports (either as a participant or a spectator). Gyms are not included in the sports category, but under health and wellbeing, so we will look at gyms later in the week. Who’s more sporty? Tell us what you think by adding a comment! And tomorrow we’ll be looking at work and education in Telford versus work and education in Shrewsbury. Who’s working harder?
